How to Get Your Shopify Products Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini & Perplexity (2026)
Optaru · Published September 16, 2026
AI assistants now recommend products directly. When a shopper asks ChatGPT “best cooling mat for a large dog under $40,” it names products instead of showing a search page. Getting named is a new discipline — GEO (Generative Engine Optimization). Three things decide it: the AI can reach your pages, understand them, and trust them. Most stores fail on understanding and trust. Here is how to fix each, honestly.
1. Make sure the AI can reach you
Check that robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot or Google-Extended. Then check that your firewall or bot protection (for example Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode) is not silently blocking them — this is the most common killer, and the easiest to miss. Test it directly: ask ChatGPT or Perplexity “what can you tell me about yourstore.com?”
2. Turn on Shopify’s AI channels (US stores)
ChatGPT: your products are discoverable through the Shopify Catalog, usually with no setup. Google AI Mode & Perplexity: enable Agentic Storefronts under Settings › Sales channels. Whichever channels you use, keep price, availability and inventory in sync — an assistant that quotes a wrong price stops trusting the source.
3. Give the AI something real to understand
Most stores lose here. An assistant reads your product descriptions, and two problems are everywhere: raw supplier spec-sheets (the ones still saying “Brand Name: NONE”), and the same description copied across many products — or many stores. Identical text gives the engine no reason to pick your page.
Good looks like:
- A description written for your store — the use case, who it is for, real sensory detail.
- Complete attributes, and Product schema with an Offer and genuine reviews.
- Human-written titles and real alt text, not a supplier's file name.
4. Earn trust: reviews and mentions
Perplexity builds its product cards partly from reviews, so a page with genuine reviews is far more likely to be recommended. And mentions across the web — buyer guides, comparisons, and Reddit, which AI engines cite constantly — often tip an assistant toward naming you.
5. Publish answer-shaped content
Write the page that answers the exact question a shopper asks an assistant: “best [category] for [use case]” guides, “A vs B” comparisons, and FAQ sections marked up with FAQPage schema. Answer the question directly and you become the source the assistant quotes.
The honest timeline
This is not a switch you flip. Crawlers re-index over weeks; trust accumulates over months. Expect two to three months before AI engines meaningfully surface a store that was previously invisible — and the clock only starts once your pages are clean and reachable.
FAQ
- Does duplicate or supplier copy really keep me out of AI results?
- Yes. Identical text gives the engine no reason to prefer your page; it picks one version, and it is rarely the smallest store.
- Is llms.txt the magic file?
- Not yet. Major assistants mostly read your HTML directly. Treat it as future-proofing, not a ranking button.
- How do I know if it is working?
- Watch GA4 for referrals from chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai, and periodically ask the assistants for recommendations in your category.
